We value our health or at least we should. Dubai’s chemists / pharmacies have trained staff available to help you.  Simply visit any chemist or pharmacy and ask the pharmacist for advice.  The shop floor assistants are not trained to answer your medical questions or give advice so always refer your health queries to the chemist / pharmacist.

Most expat workers and their families have medical insurance through their employer but this is not always the case and it is not always offered.  Dubai authorities have now brought into place legislation to ensure that all employees are provided with medical insurance.  There are a limited number of providers so double check which insurance company is offering the cover.  The company must be a bone fide provider. Over the course of the next year or so companies, depending on the number of employees will need to provide cover  to their staff  (Health cover in Abu Dhabi is already mandatory and has been for a few years.)

Many of the medicines which are ‘prescription only’ in some western countries are available over the counter in Dubai. There are fully qualified chemists / pharmacies who are able to help you. The chemist will advise on the medicine you should take so ensure you give him or her a very accurate description of your symptoms.

Obviously, if you have serious symptoms and are very unwell you should visit one of the many hospitals in Dubai.  According to Dubai Health Authority an emergency service is available in 3 Dubai Health Authority hospitals where there is no charge if it is deemed a genuine emergency.  Please note that Latifa Hospital only deals with women and children.  Check out our short guide.
